The use of aluminium foil containers in microwave ovens is safe

Conclusive evidence that aluminium foil packaging can be used safely in microwave ovens has been established by a study from the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV in Freising, Germany. The results dispel the myth that aluminium foil containers are unsafe for use in microwave ovens and prove that consumer fears about using aluminium foil packs in the microwave are unfounded. In fact in some instances consumer convenience is improved as not only are aluminium foil packs more rigid, something that is equally applicable to dual-ovenable containers, the use of aluminium foil enhances the appearance of the food when heated in the microwave oven. For example the study found that in the case of lasagne heated in a microwave oven its visual appearance was superior as a brown crust was formed on the surface.

There is no tenable reason why aluminium foil packaging materials should not be used in microwave ovens - as long as a few basic rules are heeded, ones that also apply to other microwave equipment, too (see diagram - Aluminium trays in the microwave oven - the right way to do it). The use of aluminium foil packaging materials for heating food in the microwave oven is safe and efficient and what's more - the meals are more evenly cooked than is the case when containers made of other materials are used. Damage to the microwave appliance or any impairment in the oven's performance due to the use of aluminium trays can be virtually completely excluded. The study confirms that aluminium foil containers are perfectly suited for heating meals in microwaves ovens.
